The Culture of Heaven The Great Divorce Our main event of the semester will be a one-man drama, "The Great Divorce," based on the novella of the same title by C.S. Lewis. Barrymore Award winning actor Anthony Lawton will be the guest artist for that campus-wide Veritas event: View excerpts of Lawton's performance recorded at Cambridge University, U.K. in July of 2008 (hosted by the C.S. Lewis Foundation of Redlands, CA):
"Now this is storytelling. Anthony Lawton holds us rapt -- you can feel the intensity of the audience's attention -- with his masterful performance in The Great Divorce..... Each character....comes to life through Lawton's voice as he walks that fine line between the dramatic and the narrative. He brings the old-fashioned, very literary vocabulary to life." Lewis wrote about a great and final "divorce" as a thoughtful response to the book, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, by William Blake. The subject of heaven and eternity is one on which we ponder too little, as Lewis stated in his chapter titled "Hope," in Mere Christianity: The Culture of Heaven For five weeks leading up to Lawton’s performance, we will discuss scriptures such as Revelation 21 & 22, I Corinthians 15, and reflections on eternity future by C.S. Lewis, N.T. Wright, Randy Alcorn, Tim Keller, Peter Kreeft, and others: 10/7 – Part 1: “A Resurrection Body in Eternity Future” See Calendar for times and locations.
